Strutting onto the Korean soul scene armed with a silken voice and a penchant for sass is KPOP’s latest initiate, Jacqui.
'Dirty Mirror Selfie' marks Jacqui's debut full-length album, produced in collaboration with glowingdog (RM, Damons year, sogumm, Lee Hi, Dvwn), the album is an intriguing blend of Jacqui's unabashedly honest and playfully innocent lyrics, combined with metallic and industrial sounds in the production, sets a distinct atmosphere that welcomes listeners into a realm previously unexplored. Jacqui’s soundscapes of nu jazz, neo-soul, RnB, and pop are offered with integrity and wisdom beyond her years.
In 'Dirty Mirror Selfie,' Jacqui embarks on her exploration of self through music. Gazing into the dirty mirror in her room immerses Jacqui in a world of raw chaos in its purest form, elevating her to her highest vibrational state. Regardless of her appearance - whether big or small, smooth or rough, pretty or ugly - it is her duty to lovingly care for the body that holds all the pieces and values that define her. Despite the fear that comes with scrutinising every inch of her naked self, finding joy in this process is a committed journey towards solving whatever challenges she wishes to overcome.
"When creating the album I envisioned a room full of mirrors, where my reflections revealed not just what and who I am perceived to be, but also who I truly am," Jacqui says of her writing process.
Born in South Korea, Jacqui spent her childhood in China before moving to the U.S. in her teens, where a friend introduced her to the captivating sounds of Erykah Badu. Erykah Badu’s music was soul-stirring and instantaneously awakening, leading Jacqui to pursue her lifelong adoration for music. Now based in Seoul, Jacqui sees music as a deeply spiritual process of self-actualisation and fulfilment; something fate has always buoyed her towards, and intrinsic to her very being.
The rising young artist’s debut EP, ‘Birthday’ (released in 2022), marked Jacqui’s emergence from creative incubation, soundtracking the bold next steps in her undoubtedly vast career ahead. In 2023, Jacqui embarked on a tour in Australia, gracing the stage at the SXSW festival in Sydney as well as opening two shows for slchld. With all that alongside 2020’s celebrated ‘White Clouds’ single, which appeared on the hit Netflix series My Holo Love, Jacqui has already earned her title as a force to be reckoned with and is growing ever stronger with each release.
Tapping into her own essence or ‘soul’ by meticulously chiselling away to unearth the pure substance within is central to Jacqui’s music practice. Her songs ooze self-love and confidence, traversing themes of reflection and growth; of unleashing, facing, accepting, healing, returning, and repeating. As a straight-edge advocate, vegetarian, and holistic, health-conscious individual, her life has always sought to attract balance and inner peace.
The album delivers the same slick production and staunch lyricism that Jacqui has become known for, with a renewed energy that will cement her as Korean soul’s most exciting new export.
