01. 그저 하고 싶다는 Just Want To Do It
어린아이의 놀이처럼 무언가를 그저 하고 싶다는 마음은 얼마나 소중한가. 해야 해서도 아니고 무언가에 이끌리듯 혹은 중독된 듯. 그래야 할 것 같아서도 아닌. 다른 무엇과 비교할 필요도 없고 피곤하지 않고 남을 증오할 일도 없다. 그저 하고 싶다는 기쁨은 삶은 넘치게 아름다운 것으로 만든다.
그런 마음은 어느 날 문득 내 안에 자리 잡아, 고요하게 싹이 트고 어느 순간 '팝'하고 터져 나온다. 그것은 순진하며 동시에 화염이다. 달콤하며 매우 강력하고 고요하며 철저히 소란스럽다. 그런 마음은 보통 그렇다. 위댄스의 음악도 그렇다. 어느 한쪽으로 기울지 않는 매우 입체적인 감정이다.
그리고 ‘스카이킹 Skyking'의 마지막 비행과 관제탑과의 대화도 그랬다. 몇몇 사람들에게 온라인상에서 ‘스카이킹 Skyking'이라 불린 이 사람은 어느 날 활주로에 놓인 비행기를 탈취해 하늘을 날았다. 바다 위를 날며 돌고래들을 보고 비틀비틀 공중제비도 돌아보고. 그는 자신은 망가져 버린 사람이라고 했다. 망가진 사람의 망가진 비행. 그는 비행기를 조종하는 방법은 알았지만 제대로 착륙하는 방법은 몰랐다. 다른 사람들에게 피해를 주고 싶지 않다며 외딴곳에 불시착하며 생을 마감했다.
그것은 처음이자 마지막이었고, 매우 아름답고 동시에 폭력적이며 슬프고 동시에 기쁨이었다. 그저 하고 싶다는 마음이 일으킨 내 안의 폭발이 세계에 아주 작지만 분명한 흔적을 남긴다.
2020년 위댄스의 새 앨범 [Dance Pop]의 첫 번째 싱글 ‘그저 하고 싶다는'은 그런 노래다. 위댄스에게 [Dance Pop]은 복잡한 의미를 지닌다. 그것은 달콤한 팝이며 동시에 '팝'하고 튀어나오는 어떤 감정이다.
작은방에서 조용히 시작된 흥얼거리는 멜로디들이 우리의 안에서 '팝'하고 폭발을 일으켰으며, 이 음악들을 듣는 사람들의 삶에도 작고 조용한 폭탄 같은 것이 되었으면 좋겠다.
The feeling of just wanting to do something ‘just for fun’, like a child would is such a precious feeling. Just doing something because you are driven to it or addicted to it. Not doing things because you ‘have to’ or feel like you ‘should be’ doing it. You don't need to compare yourself to anything else, you don't need to be tired of doing things, you don't have to loath others. The joy of just wanting to do something is what makes life so beautiful.
One day, all of a sudden that feeling settled in me, it sprouted silently and at one moment, bursted out with a ‘pop’. It is a naive feeling, and at the same time it lights a flame inside. It is sweet and yet incredibly powerful, serene yet causes a commotion. That's how those feelings are, and so is the music of Wedance. Three dimensional music that can’t be pigeonholed.
And so it was during the conversation with the control tower during the final flight of the ‘Sky King’. Nicknamed the ‘Sky King’ online by many, this person stole a plane from the runway where he worked one day and took off into the sky. He flew over the sea where he saw dolphins and flew in twisting somersaults.
He called himself a ‘broken man’. A broken flight for a broken man. He knew how to maneuver the plane, but didn't know how to land it properly. “I don't want to hurt others,” he said, ending his life by ditching the plane in a remote place.
It was his first and last flight, it is at the same time very beautiful yet violent, very sad yet joyful. That feeling of I ‘Just Want To Do It’ caused an explosion of emotions inside me and in doing so left a small, but clear mark on the world he left behind.
‘Just Want To Do It’ is the first single taken from Wedance’s 2020 album [Dance Pop]. To Wedance, the term ‘Dance Pop’ has complex meanings. There is the sweetness of pop and at the same time it expresses the idea of feelings ‘popping out’.
The song, which started out quietly by humming melodies in a small room, caused a ‘pop’ of emotions inside us. I hope the song will be like a small, quiet bomb in the lives of the people who listen to it.
