The new EP [Kookaburra] (To be released May 19th) from acclaimed singer-songwriter eundohee marks a further step in her growth as a performer. On the five-track release, the Korean native explores themes of self-reflection, mental health, and relationships but does so with an exuberant positivity that is rarely seen in her back catalog.

The music of eundohee defies easy categorisation, lying on a complicated cross-section of influences that include folk, trip-hop, indie rock, post-punk, electronica, and more. In Seoul's folk music scene, eundohee is celebrated for her deeply personal and often somber approach to songwriting. Here, however, she explores a bigger and brighter sound, an audible demonstration of someone falling in love with creating and recording.

Her unique style has translated into much-lauded live performances, culminating late last year when she was selected to support Stella Donnelly on the Seoul leg of her tour. She currently lives in Seoul but will be moving to the UK this year to study, perform, and explore her love of Anglo-American music.

Having been releasing music since 2018, [Kookaburra] is eundohee's first release on Beeline Records, a Seoul-based independent label that features acts like Wooze, WeDance, and Soullette.

A naturally introverted soul, the process of creating music allows eundohee to project herself in ways that she usually can't. "In this castle, I can be a singer-songwriter, an electronic musician, and an indie rock artist without any interruption. I am just one person, but songwriting is a means of role-playing that enables me to show many different aspects of myself through various genres of music. In my daily life, I usually have a hard time expressing myself, but when I compose music, I have no trouble expressing emotions that I struggle to convey with language. Every time I make a new song, I feel the ecstasy of creating something new; it is a kind of role-play that gives birth to a scene that has come from inside me."

Her relationship with music, however, has not always been this pleasant, and in early 2002, eundohee went down a dark path that almost led her to quit music. "There was a time when I developed a hatred for music and was not enjoying it anymore. I didn't want to write songs anymore, but somehow that only resulted in me writing more songs than ever. I wanted to prove to myself that I didn't hate music. In this period, I discovered that if I work hard on something, the results come out well. I also found out that the process is also fun and that results are not the only important thing."

Can we expect the same levity from Eundohee in the future? Who knows. She will be releasing an accompanying EP with this that explores her more electronic influences, and time will tell if that features the sunny style of this one. For now, though, this is the sound of a musician who loves what she is doing.

eundohee는 대구에서 태어나 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 싱어송라이터이다. 2018년 데뷔 후 4년 동안 1장의 정규 앨범과 3장의 EP, 6개의 싱글을 발매하였고 호주 인디 달링 스텔라 도넬리 내한 공연의 오프닝 무대를 포함해 라이브 클럽, 페스티벌 등 다양한 무대를 통해 자신의 음악을 알려왔다.

그녀가 본명인 ‘은도희’ 대신 ‘eundohee’라는 표기를 사용하는 건 그 이름이 고유 명사로 인식되기보다 하나의 소리로서, 각자의 발음과 억양으로 불리길 원하기 때문이다. 어린 시절 재즈 피아노로 처음 음악을 배운 이후 비욘세와 레이디 가가, 포티쉐드와 매시브 어택을 거쳐 전자음악을 공부했던 그녀가 포크 기반의 인디록을 선보이는 것 또한 음악을 특정 장르로 인식하기보다 다양한 소리의 조합으로서 대하기 때문이다.

한국에서 나고 자란 그녀가 영어로 만들어진 노래들을 좋아했던 것도 비슷한 이유였다. “언어 배우는 것을 좋아하는데, 언어 공부가 재밌다기보단 다른 언어가 주는 소리가 자체가 흥미로웠어요. 언어는 마치 악기 같아서 통기타로 연주할지 일렉기타로 연주할지를 고르는 선택지 같은 느낌을 받아요.” 그녀는 영어뿐만 아니라 불어, 스페인어, 독일어를 공부하며 연주할 수 있는 악기의 선택지를 늘리는 중이다. 

그녀는 음악을 만드는 일을 성 쌓기 놀이에 비유한다. “벽돌로 만든 성벽처럼 곡들이 하나씩 쌓여서 저를 보호해주고 더 단단하게 만들어줘요. 그 안에서 저는 아무런 방해 없이 싱어송라이터도 될 수 있고 전자음악가도 될 수 있고 인디록 아티스트도 될 수 있어요.” 평소 자신을 표현하는 것에 어려움을 느끼는 그녀는 소리로 차곡차곡 쌓은 성벽 안에서 스스로에 대해 더 깊게 이해할 수 있었다.

“계획하는 것을 좋아해요. 계획하지 않으면 7시간이든 8시간이든 가만히 천장 보고 누워있을 것을 알기 때문에, 완벽하지 않아도 계획을 세우고 따라가는 것을 좋아해요.” EP 앨범 [kookaburra]의 발매를 앞둔 그녀는 이미 다음 앨범에서 또 다른 eundohee의 모습들을 보여주기 위해 많은 곡을 만들어 놓았고, 2023년 하반기부터는 영국에 머무르며 음악을 공부하고 새로운 무대를 개척해 나갈 예정이다.
